Gainesville has adopted strict standards regulating wood sources for the proposed 100-megawatt biomass power plant

It’s hard to figure how a biomass plant will be a big advance toward a more sustainable Gainesville. This article points out that many timber companies run their own small biomass plants onsite to power their operations. The new city biomass plant will reward them for bringing their scrap waste to the city plant, but won’t that divert their local power system? While burning wood may be better than burning oil, gas or coal, it is no where near as green as solar power or wind power. It seems there could be better investments for our city’s future.
