VOLUNTEER: Cedar Key Response to Gulf Oil Spill

Posted by Trish Riley, May 6, 2010

Commissioner Rooks identified areas of concern in the US Coast Guard plans for protecting the Levy County coastline from oil contamination. She announced that British Petroleum (BP) has given $25 million toward clean up efforts in Florida. She emphasized the need for early training of people to do clean up operations, i.e. not waiting until the 72 hour notice that oil will be reaching our marine resources, beaches and marshes. Training in handling hazardous materials (crude oil) and oil soaked wild life must be completed before volunteers or contract workers can participate. Sign-up lists for both wildlife workers and spill clean up workers are available at Cedar Key City Hall.
