Hong Kong leader aims for 33 per cent cut in greenhouse gases by 2020

Hong Kong’s leader said Wednesday he aims to cut the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 33 per cent by 2020 with a shift from fossil fuels to nuclear energy, but environmentalists warned about the dangers of nuclear waste.

Donald Tsang announced the target — based on 2005 pollution levels — in his annual policy speech.

Poor air quality is a frequent complaint of residents of this densely populated financial hub whose stunning skyline is often obscured by smog. For years, the Hong Kong government blamed emissions from factories in neighbouring Guangdong province, but studies in recent years have shown that much of the pollution is locally generated.
