This week the U.S. Maritime Administration opens its first ship recycling facility on the West Coast at Mare Island, home of the old naval shipyard northeast of San Francisco. Before that decaying ships in California were towed through the Panama Canal to either Texas or the East Coast.
The recycling center is located close to Suisun Bay, home of “The Mothball Fleet”, a group of old naval ships that leak lead paint and environmental toxins into the San Francisco Bay. The Maritime Administration says 40 of the ships need removal and awarded Vallejo-based Allied Defense Recycling the contracts for the first few ships.
