They don’t believe in climate change, vote to eviscerate environmental programs, and now the Republicans’ militant new House majority is dismantling ex-Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “Green the Capitol” campaign.
Returning from a week-long recess, members and staff discovered polystyrene cups back in use at the Capitol Cary-Out, the Washington Post reported on Monday.
The four-year “Green the Capitol” campaign, introduced by the Democratic Speaker, reduced energy use in the U.S. Capitol by 23 percent and cut down water consumption by 32 percent. But aspects of it, notably a composting component, were controversial.
The about-turn was announced by a press aide to John Boehner, the speaker of the House of Representatives, who tweeted on Monday morning: “The new majority – plasticware is back”.
Environmental organisations condemned the return to plastic. “They are willing to undo progress when they should be looking at getting their own house in order. ” said Tony Iallonardo of the National Wildlife Federation.
