Shark census finds 219 in California waters

At 219 adult or near-adult sharks, the first-time population estimate is much lower than those of other large marine predators, such as polar bears or killer whales, whose numbers range into the thousands.

But it isn’t possible to know if the number means the population is in danger, said UC Davis doctoral student Taylor Chapple, lead author of the census study, which was published in the journal Biology Letters this week.
