The 2011 Eat Local Challenge begins May 1st. The event is a challenge to eat local seasonal food throughout the entire month of May. A list of locally owned restaurants participating in the event is available online. The event is hosted by Hogtown HomeGrown founder, Stefanie Hamblen. This year’s Kickoff party will be held at Kumarie’s Organic Garden Sunday, May 1 at noon. The event features cooking demonstrations with samples every half hour from noon to 3 p.m., musical entertainment, as well as food and garden activities for children and adults. Kumarie will be selling vegan and vegetarian food and tickets for prizes such as CSA shares. The Community Celebration will mark the end of this year’s Eat Local Challenge. The celebration is held at Sweet Dreams Homemade Ice Cream, at 3437 West University Avenue, Sunday, May 29 at 4 p.m. The event features door prizes from local businesses and restaurants.
