Renowned Author, Richard Louv, to Speak at Santa Fe College Oct. 9

Richard Louv, journalist and author of the international bestseller Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, will speak at Santa Fe College on the topic of “The New Nature Movement,” based on his new book, The Nature Principle.

The reading and presentation, which will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9 in Santa Fe’s new 600-seat Fine Arts Hall, is free and open to the public.

Louv’s acclaimed “Last Child in the Woods,” translated into 10 languages and published in 15 countries, galvanized an international movement to reconnect children with nature.

In “The Nature Principle,” Louv presents a call to action, inviting his readers to tap into the restorative powers of the natural world. Louv’s new book is “about the power of living in nature–not with it, but in it.”

The author writes that “the twenty-first century will be the century of human restoration in the natural world,” a message he has brought to the White House, state legislatures, boards of education, and citizen naturalists throughout the world.

In building his case for a “nature-balanced existence,” Louv builds on a multi-disciplinary approach driven by economic, social and environmental solutions. His vision and writings earned Louv the 2008 Audubon Medal, presented by the National Audubon Society, one of many such awards, and he is co-chairman of Canada’s National Children and Nature Alliance.

His writings have influenced how we think about school curriculum, playground design, health and wellbeing, and the greening of the economy.

The presentation will be followed by a book signing and reception with the author. The Santa Fe Bookstore will be present to provide books for purchase.

There is no charge for admission. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Louv’s talk is sponsored by the SF English Department, SF Natural Sciences Department, Office of Academic Affairs, The Honors Program, Sustainable Santa Fe, and Student Life.
