Editorial: A plan to save Silver Springs

What do the people of Ocala/Marion County want to happen to Silver Springs?

That is the question the springs’ owner, the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation, is poised to ask next month when it holds a community meeting to hear from the citizenry — a meeting whose date has not been set.

The good news is there appears to be a growing consensus among state and local officials, and most of the public, that something must be done to rescue and restore the world’s most famous freshwater spring from the steady degradation of decades of pollution, overpumping and neglect. And the evidence is irrefutable: nitrate levels are too high, spring flow is too low and efforts to address both too long in coming.
