For the next assessment report of the IPCC (AR5), attention is being given to development of climate information that is appropriate for adaptation, such as decadal‐scale and near‐term predictions intended to capture the combined effects of natural climate variability and the emerging climate change signal. In this talk I will discuss climate variability and trends as seen in the observed record and the relative abilities of both statistical and dynamical approaches to capture these. In particular, I will outline a novel statistical methodology that we are developing to layer climate information.
