A visibly angry President Obama spoke from the White House this afternoon, following the successful Republican filibuster that derailed a bipartisan background-check compromise. For all the punditry in recent years about the president being a Spock-like professor, too reserved to show his emotions, I think this 13-minute speech should end that meme — permanently.
Obama described today as a “pretty shameful day for Washington,” though he vowed to keep the fight alive. “I want to make it clear to the American people that we can still bring about meaningful changes that reduce gun violence.”
The president added, in no uncertain terms, “Instead of supporting this compromise, the gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill.”
