Since launching our online petition (http://chn.ge/12v53rY) to permanently end GRU’s purchases of mountaintop removal coal two weeks ago, we’ve received nearly 500 signatures. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to sign our petition, then share it with your email and Facebook contacts and ask them to do the same.
We’ve gotten some good media coverage about our campaign recently. You can follow our progress by “liking” us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GainesvilleLovesMountains
We’re also asking our Gainesville supporters to please send a personal email or make a brief phone call to our City Commission letting them know that you support our ordinance. Personal contact from constituents makes a huge difference. Our Commission can be reached here: http://www.cityofgainesville.org/GOVERNMENT/MayorCityCommission/tabid/362/Default.aspx
And finally, here’s a message from one of our partners about another local campaign that we’re supporting:
Call for Volunteers to Canvass: Volunteers needed Saturday June 1st, 2013
Gainesville Loves Mountains is partnering with environmental and social justice organizations to promote community awareness on coal power plant waste site issues. We are conducting a community survey of residents living around the Deerhaven Generating Station and we are looking for volunteers to go door-to-door for a few hours Saturday June 1, 2013. Training and refreshments will be provided. Friends also welcome.
