marchAbout 150 people showed up to protest the agricultural biotechnology corporation Monsanto on Saturday in a march from the Harn Museum of Art to the intersection of 34th Street and University Avenue.

The local protest was part of a global event called March Against Monsanto, which has inspired marches in about 300 cities in more than 40 countries. The protest movement has grown in large part through social media, and the campaign has been “liked” by more than 140,000 people on Facebook.

Protesters joined the march mainly because of health and environmental issues involving products made by Monsanto. They oppose insecticides created by the company as well as genetically modified foods, and they are pushing for the labeling of such foods, said march organizer Joanna Montana.
