The legal battle over whether to allow a controversial cattle ranch to withdraw water from the aquifer, possibly interfering with the flow and health of nearby Silver Springs, has become downright cantankerous.

Environmentalists are accusing Sleepy Creek Lands, owner of the proposed 30,000-acre cattle ranch, of playing a legal shell game and changing its water permit applications at the 11th hour.

“Any level of trust we might have been able to develop as we attempt to professionally move toward resolution of this case has been seriously damaged by your lack of candor and lack of courtesy and professionalism,” John Thomas, lawyer for the environmentalists, recently wrote to lawyers for Sleepy Creek Lands and the St. Johns River Water Management District.
