Almost 100 aquatic birds died this week in oil-sands tailings ponds as fog during annual migrations increased the numbers of waterfowl near bitumen processing.

Sixty birds died at Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNQ)’s Horizon pond, the company said, while 30 birds died after landing in Syncrude Canada Ltd.’s Mildred Lake and Aurora tailings reservoirs, Will Gibson, a Syncrude spokesman, said in a phone interview today. Another six perished in Suncor Energy Inc.’s ponds, said spokesman Michael Lawrence.
