Two rival Silicon Valley tech giants are planting green roots close to home, unveiling two massive renewable energy projects that will burnish their trendsetting images and save them money down the road.

Apple disclosed an $848 million deal Tuesday that will lay down solar panels in a remote Monterey County valley along the San Andreas Fault. Google will announce its own energy deal Wednesday to build a forest of new wind turbines at the Altamont Pass, the well-traveled gateway connecting the Bay Area with the Central Valley.
