A neighborhood fundraiser will be held for Lauren Poe on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 913 NW 36th Terrace, Gainesville, Fla.  Poe is running for mayor in 2016.

Former Gainesville City Commissioner Lauren Poe, who recently left office after declining to run for re-election this spring, announced Wednesday that he has filed to run for mayor — and he is the first to do so.Poe previously held the At-Large Seat 1 spot on the City Commission, which is now filled by newly sworn-in Commissioner Harvey Budd. When he decided last year that he wouldnt run for re-election, Poe told The Sun his focus would be on his growing family but that he hadnt ruled out the possibility of running for office again in the future.Poe is married to Emily Monda Poe and has two daughters, the youngest of whom is 5 months old, according to a Wednesday news release in which Poe said the greatest challenge that must be addressed in Gainesville is equity.Among other things, the city needs to work on building a transportation system that works for everyone, he stated, explaining that he is running for mayor because this town “needs new leadership to ensure that each resident is counted equally and fairly.”Having served six years on the commission, Poe stated he would fight to protect Gainesvilles families and neighborhoods.”I will bring integrity and reason to the office of mayor. Too much effort has been spent on dismantling the policies that have led to an expanding economy and more equitable city,” he said in the news release. “As your mayor, I will work to strengthen our city, utility and community, not sell it off to the highest bidder.”
