Health Officials Confirm Wastewater Contamination In Suwannee, Withlacoochee Rivers

LIVE OAK — A health advisory already in effect for the Withlacoochee River was extended Thursday to include the Suwannee River… The Florida Department of Health in Hamilton, Madison and Suwannee issued the joint health advisory Thursday that the river waters are not safe for contact during recreational use. Test results from water samples taken in the area by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection confirmed high levels of enteric bacteria, possibly due to a spill of untreated sewage reported by the City of Valdosta, Georgia, the release states… Valdosta reported a sewage leak Tuesday that began Sunday. According to Valdosta officials, an estimated 2,237,650 gallons of raw sewage and storm water spilled out of a six-million-gallon basin at the city’s new wastewater treatment plant. The leak was discovered at 11 p.m. Sunday and stopped at 2:24 a.m. Wednesday, according to Valdosta officials.
