The Age of Stupid (2009)

The Age of Stupid (2009) was one of the 12 films screened at the very first Cinema Verde Environmental Film Festival, and nine years later it remains one of the very best movies we have had the honor to bring to the Gainesville community. Directed by Franny Armstrong, The Age of Stupid stars Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlewaite as the lone survivor in a post-apocalyptic society in the year 2055. Over the course of the film, his character is forced to grapple with humanity’s failure to respond to climate change as he takes us through footage through the early-to-mid 2000s.

A unique hybrid of science fiction, documentary, and animation, The Age of Stupid looks to our past and our future in the hope of affecting change in the present, taking audiences through an emotional roller coaster in attempt to raise the public consciousness. In a glowing review of the film, Paul Byrnes from the Sydney Morning Herald stated that “The film is a wake-up call with an elegiac tone — not quite hectoring but pressing. It goes well beyond the arguments about science that Al Gore tried to straighten out in An lnconvenient Truth. This is about human nature, greed and personal responsibility. It aims to scare and galvanize — and it’s pretty good at both”.

The film was a critical success and was screened in 71 different countries, reaching an estimated global audience of over 6 million people. In addition to being an official selection in Cinema Verde, the film won multiple awards, including best documentary at the Grierson Awards, the Sunny Side of the Doc, the Birds Eye View Film Festival, and the British Independent Film Awards, in addition to the the Hawaii International Film Festival award for best feature film.

Cinema Verde was honored to show this film to audiences in our festival, and we continue to strive to bring environmental education to the Gainesville community and beyond.

Cinema Verde will be holding its 9th annual environmental film festival February 8-11th,, 2018. We will screen over 40 films from acclaimed filmmakers that, just like The Age of Stupid, aim to educate just as much as to entertain.

The Age of Stupid is available for streaming in Amazon Video and Spanner Films.
