Looking for something to do tonight? Check out the trailer below:

Gasland: “Halliburton has developed a way to get more natural gas out of the ground—a hydraulic drilling process called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” for short. Energy companies across rural America are attempting to lease property from residents in order to drill for natural gas.

Filmmaker Josh Fox received a lucrative offer from an energy company wanting to lease his property to tap into a reservoir of natural gas. Fox decided to take his camera and meet other rural residents on the front lines of fracking. He traveled to 32 states and discovered toxic streams, ruined acquifers, dying livestock, brutal illnesses, and kitchen sinks that burst into flames. He learns that all water is connected and perhaps some things are more valuable than money. (Info from sundance film festival).”

Our 2011 festival will continue to bring informative and inspiring environmental films to Gainesville and we look forward to expanding our reach to the community at large, helping to broaden environmental awareness and engaging more of our community in next year’s fun.

We are so appreciative of all of you who supported us with your sweat, tears and funds… and we need you again.

We are looking for a few interested people with some time to dedicate to growing, promoting and supporting the next festival. We have enough time this year to really establish a financial basis for this year and the years to come. We’ve listed several areas that we need help with below – please let us know if you would like to help:

Legal Assistance

We need to create a 501 (c)3 organization for the Festival, and we need help getting this done. If you’ve got the skills and the time, please let us know!

Development/Fundraising
We are looking for someone with the ability and desire to raise funds for the festival. This person will research and identify funding sources and solicit sponsorship support from local, regional and national businesses, individuals and corporations.

School/Community Outreach
This is an area we’d really like to develop this year. We’d like to engage local groups by involving them in local environment-related projects, festival activities and film screenings. We are seeking an individual who can identify and work with the local schools, churches and community groups to help engage them in the festival and local projects.

Administrative Assistance
We are looking for a detail oriented, computer savvy person to help with the coordination of the festival office functions.

Grants Researcher/Writer
Working with staff researching and writing grants: This job needs to be tackled immediately!

Marketing
We are looking for assistance both traditional marketing – ads, print media, broadcast media as well as social networking, blogging and video.

Thank you so much for your interest in and support of the festival. Please let us know asap if you’d like to help fulfill any of these volunteer positions.

Sincerely,

Tapped is an excellent film about the bottled water industry:

“We must put the repair of our water infrastructure at the TOP of our agenda – on the federal and local levels. Americans have access to some of the cleanest drinking water in the world – without the proper infrastructure to deliver that water we will soon see more and more places in America that resemble developing nations. Think I’m exaggerating? Check out this town just three hours from Los Angeles!

2. When citizens do not maintain control over public water supplies than access to clean drinking water becomes a luxury relegated to only those that can afford it.

Just this year Health Canada, the equivalent of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, announced it plans to ban the sale and application of all weed’n feed type products across Canada by the end of 2012. Half of Canada has already banned such products. Narrated by author and activist Paul Tukey and directed by Brett Plymale, A Chemical Reaction will have you cheering for the small town of Hudson, who fought the giant chemical lawn care companies for ten years.

Featuring stunning footage of medicinal plants and thought-provoking interviews, the film calls for a re-awakening of traditional knowledge about plants and their uses. Numen is for herbalists, gardeners, medical practitioners, plant lovers – and everyone concerned about human and environmental health. A primary objective of Numen is to bring the same awareness to medicine and the medical industry that the organic food movement has brought to food and the food industry. The film presents a sobering view of conventional healthcare and the dangers of environmental insults, as well as a vision of safe, effective and sustainable medicine. It offers stories about how individuals have improved their own health and well-being and provides concrete steps for viewers to do so as well. Most broadly, the film encourages viewers to think deeply about the sources of their medicine and how their healthcare choices affect themselves and the larger web of life. It inspires us all to deepen our relationship with the natural world and reminds us of the healing made possible by re-embracing our place in the wider web of life.
