Deep within one of north Georgia’s most scenic state parks are two waterfalls that have never had formal names. In fact, officials have always called them simply “waterfall #1” and “waterfall #2.” Now the rangers at Cloudland Canyon State Park have decided they would like help in christening the waterfalls with names that are as pretty as the falls themselves.

The park is sponsoring a “Name the Waterfalls” contest through April 15, with the grand prize being an overnight getaway, as well as the pride of naming one of Georgia’s natural attractions. Winners will receive a two-night stay in a Cloudland Canyon State Park cottage or a three-night stay in the campground, an annual disc golf pass, Canyon Grill gift certificates and more. Winners will be announced by April 30, 2011.

Contestants can download an entry form from GeorgiaStateParks.org/CloudlandContest-NameWaterfalls. The website includes photos of the waterfalls which sometimes change in appearance due to weather and rainfall. Forms may be mailed or dropped off at the park’s office, open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m daily. Cloudland Canyon State Park is located on Ga. Route 136, 8 miles east of Trenton and I-59, and 18 miles west of LaFayette.

Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon is one of the most scenic state parks in Georgia, offering rugged geology and beautiful vistas. The park straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton’s Gulch Creek, and elevation differs from 800 to 1,980 feet. The most spectacular view into the canyon is found near the picnic area parking lot; however, hikers who explore the bottom can see the wateralls. Cottages and campsites are available for overnight guests.

To learn more, visit GeorgiaStateParks.org/CloudlandCanyon or call 706-657-4050.

This four-day global event on April 11-14, 2011 will take place in San Diego, California at the Town & Country Resort. Two preconference workshops will be held on Monday, April 11. Three tracks of concurrent Conference sessions along with a trade show featuring more than 50 exhibitors are scheduled on April 12 and 13, followed by an all day site tour on April 14.

BioCycle Global 2011 will bring together facility managers, developers, public officials, investors, regulators, researchers, industry executives, equipment providers, haulers, advocates and other professionals from around the world dedicated to a common goal of successful and sustainable organic resource management. Global Conference sessions focus on that goal, discussing best management practices, infrastructure and programs to maximize diversion, conversion and utilization of organic wastes to yield compost, digester biogas, biofuels and other high-value by-products. BioCycle magazine has a well-earned reputation for attracting participants who are ready to move projects forward and need to learn about the latest industry trends, projects and equipment in waste diversion, composting, organics recycling, renewable energy and sustainable community infrastructure.

About the Rutherford Grange

Grange Halls were an integral part of rural life across the country after the civil war. Originally created for farming families as community centers, the Granges also banded together as an affiliation to advocate and advance farmer interests. The Rutherford Grange has served as a meeting place within Napa Valley since 1914, and hosted many public events including socials, dances and even meal service for migrant farm workers. Like many Granges across California, the Rutherford Grange suffered from an aging and dwindling membership, but has recently been given new life by fresh leadership and a renewed sense of purpose.

Plans include fixing up the Grange Hall and hosting a broad range of community events.

Bike Parade, Homecoming Gainesville, and Ribfest!

Homecoming, October 15th Noonish

Homecoming Parade/5th Ave and 6th St

Join other bike enthusiasts at this year’s homecoming parade when RunBikeWalk (runbikewalk.com) will have a unit in Wave 4 of the parade and eventually join this year’s Ribfest. Ribfest is a fundraiser for the Cotton Club and will feature of course ribs, live music, and family oriented fun as well as a collection of bikes and bike enthusiasts along the new 6th St. bike corridor. We hope this to be the first festival of many Homecoming Gainesville festivals where we can bring together the celebration of the Gator Nation with the richness of our community on Homecoming parade day.

If you are interested in joining the parade or contributing in some way to this year’s event please contact Michael Amish at mike@indiogreenstore.com or for more questions call 328.7721

From Don Davis:
The timing of this year’s Solar Tour fits well with Gainesville Regional Utilities’ recent announcement that they will open up their Feed In Tariff Incentive Program for solar photovoltaic systems of 10 killowatts or less. I think the rate ($ .32/kwh) will remain the same for those who apply the first week of October and are accepted. But, come to Indigo on 4th Avenue at 2pm on Sunday and hear all the details from the head guru, Ed Regan. Following Ed’s talk, you will have the opportunity of visiting solar photovoltaic sites. In years past they have included a commercial site and several homes. You can go to see one or all. It’s a real opportunity to poke around in someone’s backyard and check out their solar installation so I encourage you to attend
